Reagan criticizing Carter for undercutting Shah of Iran: Shah did our hard bidding for us
Ironically, Carter's lenience towards the Islamic revolution, caused him his presidency in the aftermath of the hostage situation. The Iranian revolutionaries gave Reagan an invaluable political gift by releasing hostages right after he took office. This earned him popular support in the U.S., leading to a 2-term presidency. Reagan increased the U.S. military and intelligence budgets, and pursued an iron fist policy towards Iran, and mainly supported Saddam Hussein during his invasion of Iran. His one-attempt later to make secret amends with Iran resulted in the Iran - Contra fiasco.
